Tourist guide part 3: Los Gatos and Campbell

Open daily: Fleming Jenkins, Testarossa
Open weekends: Pinder, Black Ridge
Appointment Only: Heart's Fire, Perrucci Family, Sensorium, Stroth-Hall, Travieso

Testarossa are open daily from 11-5PM in the old Novitiate winery in Los Gatos. They also make wines under the Novitiate label. Fleming Jenkins have a tasting room nearby in downtown Los Gatos, open daily except Mondays from noon-6PM. To the south just off Highway 17 Black Ridge are open from 11-5PM on the third weekend of the month, and at other times by appointment. Sensorium Wines and Perrucci Family are also located in Los Gatos; I believe both are available by appointment but I've never visited either of them. Neither are participating SCMWA members.

In Campbell four wineries share an industrial unit close to the junction of San Tomas and Highway 17 under the banner of Campbell Winemakers' Studio.
Pinder and Travieso pour their wines every Saturday between 11AM and 4PM. Heart's Fire are open between 1-4PM on the first Sunday of each month. Stroth-Hall are only open by appointment.

Pinder 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon, Gallaway Vineyard

I had this earlier in the year and wasn't particularly knocked out by it - I'm afraid it hasn't got any better since. The nose shows pear drops and a vegetal note. There isn't much fruit, just some tart redcurrant with a touch of oxidation. Tannins are still there on the finish. The sink enjoyed it more than I did. No rating.

2006 Pinder Viognier, Finley Vineyard, Santa Cruz Mountains

The fruit comes from one of Cooper Garrod's estate vineyards, so I was hoping for something along the lines of the Cooper Garrod Gravel Ridge Chardonnay, only with that floral and apricot character that I associate with Viognier. Unfortunately that's not what I got.

On the nose there's pears and some white flowers. On the palate it's rich; almost an oily/glycerine character, but unfortunately it's really lacking in either fruit or bite. It's as if the wine is way past its peak already; maybe it was left in barrel too long, although it's not particularly oaky either. Disappointing.

$24, available from the winery only.

Pinder Winery

Campbell is home to four small wineries, who share an industrial unit close to the Camden exit from Highway 17. The name above the door is Pinder Winery, which was bonded in 2001 by former home winemakers John and Marie Pinder. They produce small lots of 50 to 100 cases with fruit sourced from vineyards all over the state; currently the only SCM wine is a 2006 Finley Vineyard Viognier. The small tasting room is open on weekends from 11-4. A fee of $5 is credited towards any purchase.

Pinder's facility also hosts Stroth-Hall Cellars, Travieso and Heart's Fire Winery under the banner of Campbell Winemakers Studio.

2004 Mourvedre, Contra Costa County. An oaky, smoky nose is followed by rich, gamey, meaty flavours and some good berry fruit. Surprisingly soft tannins. $22
2004 Syrah, Fairview Road Ranch, Santa Lucia Highlands Earthy, funky nose. Flavours of blueberries and white pepper. Good acidity. $26
2002 Cabernet Sauvignon, Gallaway Vineyard, Dry Creek Valley. A citrusy nose that for some reason reminds me of Pilsner Urquell. On the palate there's good fruit with a hint of volatile acidity and dusty tannins on the finish. $27
